Electrochemistry: It is the study of production of electricity from energy released during spontaneous chemical energy to bring about non spontaneous chemical transformation .
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ELECTROCHEMICAL CELL AND ELECTROLYTIC CELL.
ELECTROCHEMICAL CELL
It is a device which convert chemical energy to electrical energy.
It is based upon the redox reaction which is spontaneous.i..e enthalpy is negative .
The electrodes are usually set up in two saperate beakers.
The electrolyte taken in the two beaker are different.
The electrodes taken are of different material.
The electrodes on which oxidation taken place is called anode (is negative pole ) and on which reduction taken place is called the cathode (is positive pole)
To set up this cell ,a salt bridge /porous pot is used.
ELECTROLYTIC CELL
It is a device which convert electrical energy into chemical energy.
The redox reaction is non spontaneous and taken place only when electrical energy is supplied .i.e (enthalpy is positive)
Both the electrodes are suspended in the solution or melt of the electrolyte in the electrolyte in the same beaker.
Only one electrolyte in the same beaker.
The electrolyte taken may be of the same or different material.
The electrodes which is connected to the negative terminal of the battery is called the cathode ; the cation migrate to it which gain electrons and hence ,a reduction taken place, the other electrode is called the anode.
No salt bridge is used in this case.

Application of nernst equation:
To calculate electrodes potential of a cell
It is used to calculated iron concentration.
The equation is also used in the marine environment.
Helpful in figuring the potential of an iron with the change over the membrane.
it is used in pH measurement .
It can be used in potentiometric. titrations and solubility products.
